Fujitsu Lifebook T580

There aren’t many convertible tablet manufacturers out there today, but Fujitsu is still one of them that produce such devices. One such product would have to be the Lifebook T580 which is about the size of a netbook and has a 10-inch touchscreen display that swivels in order to reveal a physical keyboard. It is in fact one of the most powerful convertible tablets out there thanks to its impressive hardware specifications.

The Fujitsu Lifebook T580 measures 10.5 x 7.3 x 1.3 inches (HWD) and has a rather chunky appearance, tipping the scales at 2.9 pounds. That 10-inch display has a native resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels which is considerably better than most netbooks which have a maximum resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels. The essence of a convertible tablet would have to be the swivel hinge which allows the screen to lay flat against the keyboard.

Speaking of the keyboard, it measures only 93% of a full-size unit which means that the typing experience will feel a little bit cramped. We don’t like that the comma, arrows and period keys are way too small and you will probably end up mistyping quite frequently.

As for features, the Fujitsu Lifebook T580 comes with a fingerprint reader, an HDMI port, Gigabit Ethernet, Smart Card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, an SD card slot and VGA out. Above the screen you will also notice a 1.3 megapixel webcam. You’ll be able to store your files on the 160GB hard drive which unfortunately is too small for today’s standards. Also on board are Bluetooth and 802.11n.

This convertible tablet from Fujitsu is powered by an Intel Core i5-560um processor clocked at 1.33 GHz which even though is a low-voltage processor, it still manages to be considerably more powerful than the Atom CPU which powers most of today’s netbooks. The tablet is capable of a 1.44 score in Cinebench R11.5, which is almost three times more than the Lenovo S10-3t and the Dell Duo (0.46). The T580 is capable of finishing Handbrake, which is a video transcoding test in a little over 4 minutes while the other two models aren’t even able to run it at all. We would have preferred that Fujitsu installed 4GB of RAM, instead of 2GB.

What we don’t like about this model would have to be its small 3-cell battery which is capable of lasting only two and a half hours in MobileMark 2007. Compared to netbooks, the battery performance of the T580 is disappointing.

All things considered, except for the battery department, this Fujitsu Lifebook T580 is considerably better than two other convertible tablets, the Lenovo S10-3t and the Dell Duo, which both are basically netbook variants.
